Power Transmission & Distribution
With a major investment program now underway, Kuwait is addressing the rapid growth in power demand for both residential and industrial users. Upgrades to existing power stations and new power plants due to come on stream will require significant ongoing investment in power transmission and distribution. A number of contracts have recently been awarded for new substations, cable supply and installation with more projects due for release.
In response to growing demand, Al-Rashed Holdings established in 2003 as a stand alone project management, maintenance and service provider for the power transmission sector. In a relatively short time the operations have grown rapidly with over 350 technicians and support staff now active on several major contracts. Around 30 contracts have already been successfully completed or are under construction including :
- Joint Venture with Areva T & D for the supply and installation of Main Transformer Station 300/132/11kva for the Ministry of Electricity and Water.
- Supply and Installation of 33 kv Power Switchgear for Joint Operations.
- Several contracts for the maintenance of 11/0.433 kv main ring substations and power stations including switchgear and transformer maintenance.
- Several contracts for the maintenance of batteries and chargers in prime and main ring substations.
- Several contracts for the supply and installation of digital fault recording equipment in major power stations and prime substations.
- Installation of automatic meter reading systems for both Ministry and prestigious private projects.
Al-Rashed Holdings Power and Transmission works with a number of partner international companies including ALSTOM GRID (Areva T&D); Nexans Cable; Liban Cables; PRI Smart Meters; Compaq International; G-Jost Electronik.
By building a substantial local capability Al-Rashed is able to provide project management, maintenance and installation support for major international equipment suppliers and manufacturers in the field of power transmission and distribution. Al-Rashed has been involved in many major utilities projects. Most recently these include :
MEW - Shuaiba North Power Station
As the local sponsor for GE Energy in Kuwait, the Al-Rashed Group successfully supported GE to win a contract in 2007 to supply 3 GE Frame 9FA Heavy Duty Gas Turbines for the Ministry of Electricity (MEW) 900 MW Shuaiba North Combined Cycle Power Station.
MEW – Sabiya Seawater Desalination Project (Phase I)
Hyundai Heavy Industries Inc (HHI), sponsored by Al-Rashed Group, was the lowest bidder for the 2003 Sabiya Seawater Desalination project. Even though this was the first opportunity for HHI to participate in seawater desalination projects in Kuwait, HHI was able to submit the most competitive offer compared to the 2 other international bidders partially due to the active involvement of Al-Rashed Group to assist HHI during tendering and post tendering stage.
Kuwait Port Authorities - Dredging & Marine Services
Al-Rashed Group participated, as a local sponsor, in many of the dredging and marine services projects in Kuwait. Through a close business relationship with Al-Rashed Group, Ballast Nedam executed the Shuaiba Port project. Today, Al-Rashed Group represents Van Oord Dredging & Marine Contractors B.V., Netherlands who merged with Ballast Ham Dredging and became the world leader in dredging and marine services.
